Trees at DPM Elementary are SAFE!

I just finished speaking to Tom Fante, Bob Davis, and Robert Lewis of SJUSD’s M&O (Maintenance & Operations) organization out in front of Del Paso Manor Elementary School earlier this morning, and received some wonderfully good news for area residents.

Some home local owners have been concerned about the process of re-landscaping of the school grounds as part of “Measure J” (the “just for kids” Measure), specifically the part about the apparent cutting down of trees without any notice to area homeowners.

In short, those trees with plastic ribbons around the trunks are perfectly safe, and WILL NOT BE CUT DOWN.

The actual note that Bob posted.   The Trees are safe!

New Retaining Wall in front…

I started building a new retaining wall for a planter bed in front of the house yesterday.   It is built out of the same Sonoran Gold Flagstone that I used to build the front walkway, so it should match-up nicely.

Progress is slow-going, but mostly because I decided this time I was going to take my time and try some different methodologies: namely dry stacking the retaining wall intially, then following-up afterwards using expanding foam as the primary adhesive.

Also different in my strategy: most retaining walls should be tied-back into the soil that they are trying to retain.  The difference?  While I’ll have some tie-back, it won’t be significant.   The amount of soil to be retained is about two feet tall by fourteen feet wide and two feet deep, so not a lot of expansion to be expected, so I’ll be minimizing the tie-backs.

Also using ground fabric to prevent weed and soil penetration (both ways) thru the wall, so it should be rather tidy as well when the project is complete.

Starting my first day at AT&T IPAG group.

Today begins my first day at the eNOC (Enterprise Network Operations Center) IPAG (short for Internet Protocol AGgregation) group.   Training should last approximately 5 to 6 weeks, and consist of some deep-dive topics relating to Ethernet switching.  The good news is that I’ll be joining my good friend Edgar (who accepted a position on the “first” wave (I’m on the second wave), and my original CMAC manager Kelly will be joining us as well!

Heading out to CES 2009!

CESWednesday morning I’ll be getting ready and heading out the door to catch my flight to Las Vegas Nevada where the Consumer Electronics Show is being held again this year.

I’ll be hitting all of the best exhibits and checking out the newest gear.  I’ll also be helping out my friend Gabor with his product GPS Tuner, and another friend Johan with his new Bloggers-only event called CntrStg (short for “Center Stage").

An extremely important factor will be the fact that I will finally be able to meet a whole bunch of people that I have know for a very long time but never had the chance to meet in person!

And among them will be my very good friend Jack Cook, whom I owe a tasty steak dinner for all of his wonderful help and patient mentoring…

All of my subsequent posts in the next few days on the topic can be found at my techno-blog www.inmymobileworld.com.

I’m so excited!

We just got a new family Piano!

In an incredible stroke of luck, I managed to find a Krakauer piano at an Estate sale in the neighborhood.

We had been driving home with Ryan and his friend Joshua after a quick lunch out, and drove past the Estate Sale sign.  I decided to give it a look-see, and so dropped Jana and the boys off at the house, and returned on my own to look around.

I saw it after walking around for a while throughout the house; it’s one of those things that looked so natural sitting in the corner that it looked more a part of the house than it’s own existence as a musical instrument.   It took a while for me to think of it as one of the items for sale, and then a couple of minutes to find the price: $495!  Wow!   What a deal!

Even better, since this was the last day of the Estate Sale, the price was reduced by half, so that if I played my cards right, I would able to pick-up a mint condition Krakauer for only $250 (I didn’t bother to dicker over the remaining $5).

Jana’s Step-Father, Bob Jackman, is an accomplished Pianist, and Piano Tuner by trade, and he had been trying for years to get us a Piano.   Unfortunately, he lives in Southern California, so it would be price prohibitive to find one there and ship it to us here in Northern California.  Likewise, since he didn’t live locally, his odds of finding a good deal here in town were likewise against the odds.

So I called Bob and let him know about the great deal, and to see if he wanted me to move on this deal while I could.   He was, needless to say, quite excited about the find, and was equally ecstatic about the current sale price.   He gave the green-light, and so me and some of the Estate staff moved it from the Estate house to our family home with the use of their truck.

And now, it sits in our living room, where Ryan can play on it anytime!

Completed 2 of 3 Walkway Entries

DSCF0791Well, I’ve complete two of the three walkways entrances: the first being the entry at the steps of the front-porch – since it’s the one everyone will see when entering or exiting the house.  You can see the finished product to the left, all properly padded with sand and tamped into place.  No mortar used here, just dry sand.

The top-most portion is incomplete as it heads out to the Sidewalk. It flows to the left of the picture heading out to the Driveway.  I’ll install some edging when I’m done in order to hold the stones in place and keep the grass from creeping in between the stones.  On that topic, Jana and I have a plan to follow up after the project is completed and excavate out a little of the sand in order to insert some topsoil, so that we can plant some thyme or mint between the stones.  However, I suspect some settling will occur between now and then, so think that the level of the sand to go down naturally.

DSCF0793The second was the entry from the Sidewalk, owing to the fact that I wanted to make sure the “curb appeal” aspect had a higher priority than the driveway entry.  I also gave the sidewalk entry the single biggest flagstone, as you can see in the picture to the right.  I think it works well to “anchor” the entryway.

The third walkway entrance (coming from the driveway) will be started tomorrow after work, – if the weather permits.

I’d say that I’m roughly about two–sevenths the way through the final portion of the project.  This is the part where I have to fine-tune the fitting of neighboring stones.  It is certainly taking a lot longer to do than I had originally thought, especially with all the interruptions in the schedule.  At my current rate, I’m averaging about six to ten stones per day on daily (after-work) basis.  Weekends allow much more time, but then I also spend a great deal of time with Ryan when he’s here, so that can be a bit of a limitation.

Unfortunately, we won’t have Ryan next weekend, so the silver lining is that I should be able to put a good 2 solid days in that weekend.   Sigh…

Starting to lay-out the Sonoran Gold Flagstone

Picture 030Today I began laying out the Sonoran Gold flagstone, just so I could see all the pieces.  I laid them out along the actual walkway to be covered, so that they could be spread-out in some semblance of order.

As I mentioned in the previous post, it’s kind of like making sure you have all of the jigsaw pieces out on the table before you bother trying to piece the puzzle together.  Same concept.  I got most of the stones out, but I have about another 10 or so stones left in the palette.

This walkway starts at the steps (shown above), and splits off in two directions: one straight show to the front (as seen below) Sidewalk.  The second takes a 90 degree turn to the left towards the driveway (as seen to the right).

Picture 040There are nine or so Medium/Large stones (which you can see leaning against the dirt mound in the bottom picture), and one Large stone.   I’m going to try placing the single large stone at the entrance to the walkway leading-in from the Sidewalk; that should work to anchor the main entry.

Picture 042

Then there is the side entry from the driveway.  I’ll place a few of the Medium stone on that side of the walkway entry in order to anchor it as well.

Then I’m going to place six of the Medium-Large stones at the base of the stairs, and that too should do a good job of anchoring the walkway to the stairs.

Next up, I’ll start to fine-tune the fittings between each of the stones.  This will likely be the hard part.

I may have to go back and redo the layout of the sod I placed a couple of years ago in order to make things fit properly…
